What Are Crypto Liquidations?
When a leveraged futures position can no longer cover its losses, the exchange forcibly closes it — this is called a liquidation. The liquidation price is determined by leverage and maintenance margin requirements.
Long liquidations (labeled "LONG LIQ") occur when the price drops enough to wipe out a long position. Short liquidations ("SHORT LIQ") happen when the price rises against a short position.
Large cascades of liquidations — especially whale liquidations above $1M — can cause sharp price moves as the exchange sells the position into the market, triggering further liquidations in a chain reaction.
