Understanding Liquidation in Crypto Futures
Liquidation occurs when your position's losses consume your entire margin. The exchange closes your position at the liquidation price to prevent your account from going negative.
Higher leverage means your liquidation price is closer to your entry price. At 10x leverage, a 10% move against you triggers liquidation. At 100x leverage, just a 1% move can wipe your position.
The maintenance margin rate (MMR) is the minimum equity the exchange requires to keep your position open. On Binance and Bybit, this is typically 0.5% for major pairs. When your equity falls to MMR level, liquidation is triggered.

How is the liquidation price calculated?
For a long position: Liq Price = Entry Price × (1 − 1/Leverage + MMR). For short: Liq Price = Entry Price × (1 + 1/Leverage − MMR). MMR (Maintenance Margin Rate) is typically 0.5% on Binance, Bybit, and OKX for BTC/ETH positions.
What is the difference between isolated and cross margin?
In isolated margin, only the margin allocated to that position can be lost. In cross margin, your entire account balance acts as collateral — giving you more runway to avoid liquidation but putting all funds at risk.
How does funding rate affect my liquidation price?
Funding rates are periodic payments between long and short holders. When you hold a long position and funding is positive, the cost gradually erodes your effective margin — raising your effective liquidation price over time.
What is a good distance to liquidation?
Generally, keeping a liquidation distance above 20–30% provides a reasonable buffer against sudden volatility. At 5–10x leverage, BTC can easily move 10% in a single session, so maintaining sufficient distance is critical.
